Environment

The PBC is very proud of it's Environmental Initiatives. We see these as our small contribution to both our local and global neighborhood.

Outlined below are a few of our current initiatives and also links to some very handy environmental resources.

In July 2007, The PBC received a Highly Commended Award at the NSW Sustainable Cities Awards (Registered Clubs Section).

This is an acknowledgement of the work that has been done in reducing waste, increasing recycling and the successful water grant.

(The winner was the Mounties (Mt Pritchard) a super large club with serious money and resources)

The PBC recycling program

In mid-2007, Petersham Bowling Club started a recycling program that has resulted in an enormous reduction in club waste going to landfill.  The club now recycles:

The Club's sustainability program.

The club is currently working on a number of sustainability programs.

In May 2007 we were extremely pleased to hear that the PBC was successful with its August 2006 Community Water Grant application. The Australian government gave the club $47,000 and during 2007-2008 the club installed the following water saving devices:

Two dual flush toilets, water-free urinal, rainwater tanks to capture water for the bathrooms and bowling greens, a new irrigation system and a general upgrade on all taps inside and out.

On 28 November 2007, the PBC became part of Marrickville Council’s target sustainability program for businesses and organisations.

During 2008 the PBC achieved 20% less waste to landfill.

The PBC has committed to the following reduction targets during 2009:

20% less carbon emissions from electricity
10% less water use
40% less waste to landfill

Recycle all office paper and in may 2008 the club installed a roller towel service in all bathrooms. This has stopped hundreds of plastic bags full of waste paper going to landfill annually.
